Sparkling water

Sparkling water is water to which carbon dioxide has been added. The result is an effervescent liquid that tickles our nostrils and our tongue. Sparkling water is the same as carbonated water, soda water and seltzer. Sparkling water is sometimes confused with mineral water, which is water that contains dissolved minerals such as salts, sulfur and other compounds. Mineral water may also occur in natural springs.

Sparkling water forms the base for sodas since they too use carbon dioxide to produce the fizz. When pressurized carbon dioxide is forced into bottles, it escapes as soon as the bottle is uncovered. Shaking a bottle of soda or sparkling water will cause the pressure to build. When the bottle is opened, the carbon dioxide shoots out of the bottle with a spraying sound.

Carbonated water or soda water was once used to heal certain disorders like upset stomach and indigestion. Today it is used more for refreshment when mixed with other beverages. Even though water has several benefits for all living things, some people do not like the taste of plain water. Those people may prefer carbonated or sparkling water with a slice of lemon in it.

Now it is easy to make your own sparkling water at home with the help of a soda maker. By making your own sparkling water you have the advantage of knowing exactly what goes into your drink. There is no sodium as is found in store-bought sodas, and no calories, making it ideal for the weight-conscious or those trying to lose weight. Best of all you can add the fruit flavors of your choice to produce a healthier beverage. In the summer, the whole family can enjoy making these drinks together and drinking a beverage that is healthy.

SPARKLING WATER

Sodamakers come in many varieties, from the most basic seltzer bottle and chargers to the more sophisticated dispenser. Just surf the web and you are sure to find many ads for these products. You can shop for them online, or buy from the store. The seltzer bottle also called a soda siphon contains pressurized CO2 and comes in either the snap-on or screw-on type. When the charger is fitted on to the siphon and the plunger is pressed, you have sparkling water.

The other type is an appliance about the size of a coffee maker. It requires no batteries, electricity or plumbing so it can be taken with you on trips and is easy to use in the kitchen. A CO2 carbonator is housed inside the machine. A reusable 1-liter carbonating bottle is filled with water and attached to the machine which dispenses sparkling water at a touch of the button. This type may save you money in the long run as it allows you to reuse the bottles. You can make the drinks as fizzy as you like. To enhance your experience you may want to add fruit flavors purchased from Allfreightfree.com.

Soda water

Soda water is the common name given to carbonated water. It is plain water into which carbon dioxide has been dissolved, and is the major ingredient in most soft drinks. Soda water, also called seltzer water or sparkling water, has a distinctive fizzy and slightly salty taste. It is also known as club soda, although this may contain table salt and other minerals to give it the salty taste. Soda water or club soda is commonly used as a mixer for alcoholic drinks, but it can be drunk alone.

Tonic water is carbonated water which has been flavored with quinine to give it a bitter taste. Tonic water got its name from the medicinal quality of quinine and was originally used to fight off malaria, since it was intended for use in tropical regions like Asia and Africa, where malaria is prevalent. This drink originated in Colonial India when the British mixed tonic water with alcohol, preferably gin, to make it more palatable. Today, the quinine content in tonic water has been reduced by 25% to 50% and sweeteners have been added, making it less bitter. The British are the inventors of the popular cocktail, gin and tonic. Tonic water with lemon added is known as bitter lemon, and is more popular in Europe than in the United States.

Soda water is the original name given to carbonated water until World War II. During the Great Depression, it came to be known as two cents plain as it was the cheapest drink on the market and actually cost two cents. Later, when flavors were added the cost went up to five cents. In the 1950s the terms sparkling and seltzer began to be used. Carbonated water was originally used for health reasons, namely indigestion. A study was undertaken to prove the effectiveness of drinking carbonated water to relieve indigestion and constipation. At the end of the trial, the people who had been treated with carbonated water scored higher than those treated with tap water.

SODA WATER

Plain soda water is a form of low carb water since it contains no calories, and is therefore hailed as a suitable drink for those on a weight-loss diet. There is a lot of information out there about the effectiveness of drinking lots of water as a means of losing weight, although this claim has not been substantiated. Carbonated water has also been blamed for dental erosion and bone fractures, however this too has not been proven and carbonated water is believed to be as harmless as plain water. Therefore, by observing proper nutrition and drinking water, be it plain or carbonated, one can lead a healthy life.

Using Sodastream is a great way to make your own sparkling water!

SodaStream

SodaStream came into being in 1903. It was a carbonation system invented by Giles Gilby that made standard water into fizzy water and was originally sold to the upper classes.

Flavours were introduced in the 1920Õs, these included cherry ciderette and sarsaparilla. It enjoyed vast success in the 1970´s and 80´s, becoming a big hit in countries such as the UK, Germany and Australia.

The company underwent numerous changes in ownership, even being part of the Cadbury Schweppes empire at one stage. 1998 saw the company change hands for the final time when purchased by Soda Club, at that time, the biggest supplier of SodaStream to Israel.

SodaStream remained the name of the brand after Soda Club made an unsuccessful bid to change the brand from SodaStream to Soda-Club.

More recently Soda Club sought to change the SodaStream brand. SodaStream was relaunched along with a new machine and many more new flavours, concentrating on being a healthy alternative to fizzy, sugar rich drinks such as Cola and Pepsi, focusing on the health and diet issues that are so prevalent in this day and age.

The SodaStream product is essentially a home carbonation kit, which allows you to change water into sparkling water as well as allowing you to add low calorie flavours such as cola and orange. A large assortment calorie free flavours to flavour sparkling water to great taste is sold at https://allfreightfree.com.

The SodaStream machine works by forcing co2 into a bottle suitable for pressurising that is filled with water. The co2 turns the water into sparkling or carbonated water. This process of dissolving co2 is known as carbonation. The carbonated water can then be drank on its own as sparkling water, or mixed with flavours to create tasty, healthy treat.

Once the co2 canisters have been used up they can be sent back to Soda-Club who recycle the canisters, refilling them with co2 then sending them back out.

As far as the actual health and diet benefits gained from drinking SodaStream, it is claimed that all their flavours are completely sugar free and contain a maximum of 2 calories per 100ml, which is good news for parents concerned about their children´s diet.
The SodaStream machine adds only co2 to the water, meaning it does not have the added sugar that some bottled sparkling water contains, so there is little difference between it and normal water.

SodaStream have made much of their environmental and health credentials, even going so far as to say that every one litre bottle of SodaStream made saves three aluminum cans. Which in turn means that over 3 years, a family of four could slash their soft-drink-related packaging usage by over 90%.

This is quite a claim, one that in this environmentally conscious age will stand them in good stead. Sodastream has developed into a truly realistic alternative to the big players in the oft drink world.

Later versions were make that could add concentrates to create carbonate flavor drinks which were popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s when there were different concentrated syrups available. This company then merged with Soda-Club and relaunched as a way to make health drinks for kids.

The SodaStream drink maker is a small device that forces carbon dioxide into water, making it have a taste like soda pop. The system includes a machine, a canister of carbon dioxide, and reusable beverage bottles (suitable for pressurizing). The bottle, when filled with water, is screwed on to the machine, and with a push of the button ejects compressed CO2 from a canister into the bottle, making sparkling water (also called seltzer). There are a number of favors which can be used to create regular soft drinks by adding a tiny amount to the bottle of water that has been carbonated. When the canister is out of CO2, you return it to the market and purchase a new one.

With so many types of concentrate, different and unique flavors of soft drinks can be made. In the days when the systems were most popular, many well-known brands were available for SodaStream in the concentrate – such as Fants, and Sunkist.
MilkStream, a variation of the SodaStream, was created for making milkshakes. By combining ice cream, milk and Crusha syrup in a glass, inserting the machine with an extended wand into the glass, and a frothy, delicious milkshake was made.

The very first machines made were rather large were sold to upper classes of London, including the royal household. There were flavors with odd names, one being the famous sarsaparilla introduced in the 1920s, as well as commercial carbonation machines. The first machine for home carbonation was produced in 1955.

The popularity of the SodaStream during the 70s and 80s in the UK and presently are associated with nostalgia for those periods of time. The advertising jingle in 1970 was “get busy with the fizzy” and was so very popular, that the slogan was added to their logo. It was finally dropped in 1996 after 17 years.

Commercially successful, there was a perception by some that the soft drinks made by these machines were a poor version of the commercial counterparts. One of the differences noticed was that in addition to slightly different flavors of the produced drink, the bubbles made by SodaStreams are larger and shorter-lived.

What is sodapop?

It is a beverage that does not contain alcohol and is carbonated and has flavor added to it. Depending on where you live, it may be known as soda, pop or soda pop. It is sometimes in the US, just called coke.

Most of these soda pops are available in both diet and regular, with artificial sweeteners used in the diet pops.

In the US most soda pop is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) instead of refined sugar or corn syrup. But high-fructose corn syrup has been criticized by many as having bad effect on people who drink pops with this in it. Many experts believe that it is causing diabetes, hypertension, and many other problems. But there is no good evidence to support this. But pop does not contain a lot of vitamins, minerals or other nutrients plus they have food additives for coloring, flavor and as a preservative. So, I would try to get my family to cut down on drinking a lot of pop.

Many believe the soda pop is the reason for the obesity that we are seeing in children and even adults in the US today. But children in Third World countries drink large amounts of soda pop and do not have the same rates of obesity as people and children in the US but then again, these countries have pop which is flavored with cane sugar.

But whatever the type of sweetening used, its time that we mothers start offering our families healthier choices for something to drink such as water, low fat milk or fruit juice. In fact, bottled drinking waters have become quite a health fad right now with many brands and types of waters being sold in most grocery stores. If your family finds water boring to drink, there are also a number of things that you can do to give the water some flavor. Add a few pieces of fruit in the drinking water bottle as a way to slightly flavor the water or try a sparkling water or spring water as they do have a good taste. In fact, a large assortment of calorie free flavors to flavor sparkling water to great taste is sold at https://allfreightfree.com

This will keep our families consumption of soda pop down to just a few a day or even better, only a few a week. And as mothers, we should all see what the vending machines in our kids’ schools have. Many have started stocking these machines with a variety of fruit juices and even bottled water besides just soda pop. I guess the point I am trying to make is that we need to start raising our children with a healthier lifestyle, not only in the fluids they consume but also the diet they eat.

So that is all I know about soda pop, or pop or whatever you call it where you live.

Diet Soda

An increasingly weight-conscious public has heightened the demand for diet soda in recent times, to the point where it has become almost a fad. Diet soda is a carbonated drink made from carbonated water to which flavors and artificial sweeteners have been added. The first diet soda was launched in 1952 in Brooklyn, New York by Kirsch Bottling. It was a sugar-free ginger ale and was intended for use by persons suffering from diabetes, and not for dieters. However, because of its sugar-free make-up, people who were anxious to lose weight by reducing their carbohydrate intake began using it for that purpose.

Some people believe that drinking diet soda will set them on the path to physical fitness by helping them to lose weight. The soft drink industry has capitalized on this trend by manufacturing a variety of diet drinks, with Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola heading the list. Diet beverages make use of different sweeteners, however some critics claim that these drinks have an unusual aftertaste, but others disagree.

Recently, diet soda manufacturers have begun using Splenda in conjunction with aspartame for sweetening their drinks because Splenda (sucralose)has a more natural sugar taste. However, some critics charge that the taste is not better, only different. Coca Cola diet drink uses a combination of sucralose, aspartame, corn syrup and acesulfame potassium.

Despite the popularity of these low calorie drinks, diet soda is blamed for weight gain rather than weight loss. Studies have shown that artificial sweeteners cause weight gain by dropping blood sugar levels, thereby causing the person to eat more at the next meal. It was found that rats given artificial sweeteners showed increased caloric intake, weight gain and increased fatness.

Diet soda has also been linked to heart disease. One study found that people who drank even one soda had a risk of getting heart disease. The weight gain caused by drinking diet sodas can put pressure on the heart and this can lead to illness. Also, the caffeine content of sodas can contribute to heart disease. Another health concern associated with the use of diet sodas is cancer, as it has been found that aspartame and other artificial sweeteners contain carcinogens which can lead to cancer.

DIET SODA

From the above it can be seen that one should not depend on drinking diet soda in order to lose weight. By following proper nutrition guidelines, a person can achieve physical fitness and ultimately good health. Foods that are low in cholesterol like fruits, vegetables and lean meat will help to alleviate heart disease and promote healthy weight. By making healthy lifestyle choices that include proper diet, exercise and drinking water, one can enjoy a healthy
life.

Sodastream (Soda Club) fouled up in Germany

In 2006, Sodastream (Soda Club) tried denying a different enterprise to refill “their” bottles of carbonic acid, by claiming that the bottles where their property and did not belong to the customer (through contracts that all customers had to agree to).
This didn’t work in Germany, and this could very well become the norm in most countries. This niche really does need competition, both for the sake of the environment (bottles should be refilled in the store, an operation that takes a mere 20 seconds), and for price, which could easily be cut in half. Still, one should consider that sparkling water made at home already costs but a fraction of store-purchased carbonated beverages, but things could be a lot better.
Here are the facts from authority in Germany:
(Johnny, Do not spinn below this line)

April 13, 2006
Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court confirms immediate enforceability in the Soda-Club case

Soda-Club GmbH, Wiesbaden (“Soda-Club”) may not use its dominant position abusively. Soda-Club had prevented competing suppliers from refilling Co² cartridges for water carbonating machines by claiming its ownership of the cartridges.

In February 2006 the Bundeskartellamt prohibited this conduct. Soda Club opposed the Bundeskartellamt’s immediately enforceable decision by applying to the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court for interim measures. In provisional proceedings the court has now confirmed the Bundeskartellamt’s decision in all material respects. Soda-Club is dominant in the market for refilling CO² cartridges. Hindering competitors from refilling CO² cartridges represents an abuse of this dominant position. By this conduct Soda-Club prevents consumers from taking advantage of alternative refilling possibilities. Only the obligation to point out on labels on the company’s own cartridges that it is admissible to have them refilled by competitors was seen by the Higher Regional Court as a disproportionate measure.

Although Soda-Club can still appeal against the Higher Regional Court’s decision to the Federal Supreme Court, the Higher Regional Court’s decision implies that the numerous small and medium-sized bottling plants can now start to compete with Soda-Club and refill all cartridges circulating in the market.
